What makes TeamGym exciting ...?

Always a difficult question unless you have had a go yourself. The audiences, the streaming, the Team spirit and the pressure of all the team members achieving the skills, all add up to the exciting ingredients for the competing teams. All we can say is you have got to try it!

Where is teamgym going ... ?

The National Panel is confident that TeamGym will become a major sport within the UK. We anticipate that very soon it will become a discipline in its own right. It has certainly become a very important discipline in Scandinavia and the rest of Europe and the level of skills being achieved is awesome!

As with all sport, TeamGym skills are getting more and more daring and more and more complicated. In years gone by the audiences would be jumping up and down when they witnessed a full twist off the Trampette or tumble track. Now the audiences are seeing double straight fronts, multiple twisting double fronts and twisting doubles off the vault table. For the time being, triple saltos are not in the code, but how long will it be before they are common place. Needless to say this sport is fast becoming a tremendously exciting spectator sport.

What competitions are there ... ?

Currently there are two recognized BG competitions. The Tournament Cup normally in February and March with a Regional and a National level of competition, and the National Final, normally in April. The 2006 UK Calendar has not yet been set. The National and Regional Levels are split into 3 age banded levels. Level 3 for ages 8 to 12, Level 2 for ages 12 to 16, and Level 1 for those over the age of 16, all in the year of the competition. The National Levels, governed by a score, can qualify for the National Finals. The Regional Levels are aimed at the lower level teams and at present do not qualify for the National Finals. The Tournament Cup is currently acting as the qualifying round for the British Final. The Panel hopes that before long the Regions would be able to hold their own qualifying rounds. There will be a need to get more Regional Judges qualified and this will depend to a great extent on the interest shown.

There are other competitions around the country that are being held but these are mainly lower level County competitions. These competitions are welcomed and encouraged as this will eventually form the basis of Inter-County and Inter-Regional competitions. We would urge all those Clubs engaged in local friendly’s to let us know about them so that we can give you all a bit of publicity Events Calendar. There is also a new Open Championship in Newcastle and plans to hold an International Event towards the end of the year. It is hoped that both competitions will become annual events. All this information can be found on our web site.

How can we get involved ... ?

The beauty of TeamGym is that you can get involved at any level and at any age. We would suggest you obtain copies of DVD’s that are available at very reasonable prices, arm yourselves with a copy of the code ,get some kids together and have a go. Please have a look at our Technical Page. Start with simple skills and work your way up. This is a sport that has many levels and they are all part of the rich tapestry of our wonderful sport. Make sure the kids involved realize they are part of a Team in your Club and show them some routines, teach some basic skills and then have a go at streaming them. If you do that, you are on your way to becoming a TeamGym Club and we will support you in what ever way we can. Once you have a team you can start the “Team building” process. This will give you the opportunity to improve the overall team spirit within your club. It will provide social events like a night out bowling, a bar-b-que, a team holiday, you will end up with a very busy social diary.

Do we need to be qualified ... ?

The quick answer to that is YES. Like all sport and the inherent dangers of sport, insurance and litigation problems are the last things you want to get involved in. It is fair to say that all the bona fide Clubs in the UK have BG insurance and coaches at Club Level in some discipline. The beauty of being a Club Coach, recognized by BGA, is that you can attend Add on Modules, and become qualified at Club Level in TeamGym in a day! These courses have and are being held all over the UK. All you have to do is keep an eye on the web site and get to the next Add on Module. Alternatively there will be Full Club Coach courses being organized which will also appear on the web site as soon as they are in place for any assistant coach you have that would like to get involved.

Why is it so much fun ... ?

The spirit of the Team is what gives this sport a life of its own. The challenges are for a group, not an individual. Coaching a Team has many rewards; you are surrounded by a multitude of personalities that will test your coaching abilities to their extremes but what a buzz when it all comes together. What an achievement when they all do well for the Team. And this sport will give you ‘friends for life’

Are there any award schemes ... ?

The Trampette Award Scheme is now completed and ready for distribution. The Scheme is in 2 parts, a red white and blue section (RSB) which is aimed at the Clubs working at a recreational to County Level, and the other section is Gold Silver Bronze (GSB). The GSB section is aimed at Regional to National Level Teams, competing at a higher level. The RWB starter pack is available at £15 and the GSB starter pack is also £15, or both starter packs for £25. Badges are also available to order. Included in both starter packs is a summary list of award skills and a tick sheet for each award. The tick sheet is an A4 document to keep track of each gymnasts achievements. Each sheet will take 8 names. Also included is a blank certificate for each award. There will also be pass slips to give to the gymnasts as they complete an award. There are 3 sections to each award scheme and each level also has 2 sections. This information will all be on a CD so that Clubs will be able to reproduce more documentation. Who can enter the sport ... ?

Any Club in the UK can get involved in this sport. It is like all the other gymnastic disciplines, it is open to everyone interested.

How good do you have to be ... ?

The Code itself will give you that information, but if you have kids that can jump off a trampoline or forward roll on the floor you can start. From little acorns you get a massive oak tree. Just get started and you wont regret it! Just remember that the Regional Level of competitions is in place as a starting point for the lower level teams. In time a County structure will emerge and this too will be designed to embrace the lower levels and new starters.

What resource material is there ... ?

Currently there is not a lot but we are working hard to produce a starter pack that will be available as a download from our web site. For now it is important that you get a copy of the code, and the UK modifications for National and Regional Levels, and start to understand that structure. Next you should try to get any DVD’s that we make available. We currently have some very good trampette DVD’s and Portsmouth have produced another DVD of their routines at the recent Championships. Visit the Technical Page.

What is the BGA committee structure ... ?

British Gymnastics have appointed Keith Hughes as the Chairman of the British Panel. Keith has selected some of his Committee members and these people are on the BG web site or can be found on the flyer in the drop down menu, "About TeamGym" with their contact numbers. We are all ready to help where ever we can. There are currently no Regional or County structures and we would urge the Regions to try and set up something so that we can get some improved lines of communication. Any Committee must be bona fide representatives of their Regional Structure, so that they can be recognized by the Panel.

What do we wear ... ?

As with all the gymnastic disciplines there is zero tolerance to any jewellery or body piercing and hair must be neat and tidy. Females can wear leotards, with or without shorts, leggings or tights. Also cat suites and unitards but not bootleg of any type. Men can wear shorts and tee-shirts or leggings or unitards and the mixed teams will mix but match. All team kit must match. There are rules in the Code which you should also take into account. A quick look at a DVD will soon give you the right idea.

How can we receive news about courses, competitions etc ... ?

The Panel has a growing data base of contact e-mail addresses. This is administered by Enid Blott, who is also responsible for all information distribution in the UK. If you would like to be added to his distribution list, please let me know north@baga.co.uk

Why should we get involved ... ?

It is worth noting that TeamGym allows gymnasts much longevity in the sport of gymnastics. It is not unusual to see teams with members in their late 20’s or 30’s and sometimes even older. If you’re fit and willing, you can participate in this sport for a lifetime, and on the way you will meet and make lifelong friends from all the corners of our world. What a Sport!
